“Garrison Scarbrough” and the story of the story:
A few years ago, we came together as siblings and cousins to re-establish the legacy of our grandfather Jimmie Mattern. When we thought of writing a book, we needed it written in such a way that it would capture Jimmie’s larger-than-life personality and his zest for life and adventure. His story could not read like an encyclopedia entry. So, we found the perfect writer for the job: Bill Simpson.
We hope that you, the reader, will feel and experience our grandfather's life and remarkable achievements as though you were there. Billionaires are now racing to launch a new industry of commercial space travel. To know the first space travelers in the 60s said that they stood on our grandfather's shoulders to reach the stars is quite a statement – and responsibility.
Neil Armstrong told Grandpa Jimmie that aviators in every decade were all made of the same grit and love for adventure and exploration and all faced the same challenge: not enough fuel.
Seems like the issue fuel continues to perplex to this day. Hopefully the inventors out there today can solve this challenge.
Who knows what incredible accomplishments aviation will have made by then! And we can confidently say that our grandfather, and those of his pioneering generation, opened the imagination of the future inventors, and made it all possible.
Jimmie is someone we never want to forget; this book helps us keep his story front and center. We invite you, the reader, to join our family in celebrating this pioneering, can-do attitude, love for exploration, and the drive to achieve what many thought impossible.
